WP: Ukraine Provides Assistance To Syrian Rebels Overthrowing Assad

Kyiv has sent 20 experienced drone operators and about 150 FPV drones.

Shortly before the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime, Syrian rebels received military aid from Ukraine, sources familiar with the Ukrainian military's activities abroad told the Washington Post.

According to them, this happened four or five weeks ago. Specifically, Kyiv sent 20 experienced drone operators and about 150 FPV drones (first-person view) to the rebel headquarters in Idlib to help the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group in its upcoming offensive.

In doing so, Kyiv hoped it would help undermine the position of Russia and its Syrian allies, WP's interlocutors note. However, in the end, such military support played only a ‘modest role’ in overthrowing Assad, the publication's Western intelligence sources note. Yet they consider Ukraine's very attempt to deal a covert blow to Russian forces in the Middle East ‘remarkable.’ At that, senior US officials have repeatedly said that the White House knows nothing about Kyiv's co-operation with the Syrian rebels.
