The leader of the ruling party said he would block the decision.
South Korean President Yun Seok-yul has declared martial law in the country, Yonhap reports. According to the head of state, the decision was made to “eradicate pro-North Korean forces and protect the free constitutional order.”
The head of state held an emergency meeting in his office at night, and then declared a threat of paralysis of power associated with attempts to conduct impeachment proceedings against him.
“I am declaring martial law to protect the free Republic of Korea from the threat of North Korean communist forces, to immediately eradicate unprincipled pro-North Korean anti-state forces that encroach on the freedom and happiness of our people and the constitutional order,” the agency quotes the South Korean leader as saying.
It is noted that the decision to declare martial law was made after the opposition Democratic Party submitted a budget cut bill and petitions to the parliamentary budget committee to impeach the state auditor and the country's chief prosecutor.
South Korean ruling party leader Han Dong-hoon said the president's declaration of martial law was “wrong” and that he would block it together with the people of the country.
