Details.
Israel and the Palestinian Hamas terror group have agreed on a preliminary draft agreement on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages, sources told CBS News on Tuesday, 14 January.
If all details are approved and the Israeli government votes to ratify the cease-fire, implementing the agreement could begin as early as this week, the publication said.
Sources said the agreement could be the last major achievement of Joe Biden's presidency. The elected President Donald Trump will oversee the implementation of the ceasefire after taking office.
The parties are expected to prepare public statements on the success of the deal, but hope for a positive outcome remains high at all levels.
On 13 January, Axios, citing Israeli officials, reported that Donald Trump's special representative-elect for Middle East affairs, Steve Whitkoff, arrived in Israel to facilitate an agreement on releasing hostages and a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
It was noted that Whitkoff arrived ‘as part of Trump's last-minute attempt to press all sides to reach agreements before 20 January.’
