The politician had previously been holed up in a residence for weeks.
Today, investigators have come to the residence of suspended South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol to make a second attempt to arrest him. This time the law enforcers managed to detain the head of state.
This is reported by Yonhap News.
According to the publication, investigators detained Yoon, to whom the impeachment had been declared, in his residence on Wednesday. After, he was taken for questioning in connection with the country's short-term martial law, which he imposed in December.
According to the Directorate for the Investigation of Corruption among High Officials, the warrant for the detention of the ousted president was executed at 10:33am in the morning. Stepladders to climb into the windows of the residence were used for the arrest, among other things.
‘A live broadcast showed a convoy of vehicles, presumably carrying Yoon, leaving the presidential residence in central Seoul and heading to the CIO office in Gwacheon, south of Seoul,’ the publication wrote.
Prior to that, the politician had been hiding in the residence for weeks, not going outside or appearing for interrogations. In addition, the presidential security service and the military blocked the entrances to the residence, both this time and in previous times, to prevent arrest.
The media note that this is the first time in the history of South Korea that a suspended but acting President of the country has been arrested.
We remind you that on 3 December, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol imposed martial law in the country. It lasted about 6 hours and was not at all related to the military threat, but solely because of political motives, as the media wrote. Yoon soon apologised for making such a decision.
However, on 14 December, the South Korean parliament announced his impeachment.
