Are they being prepared to be sent to the front?
On Thursday, 16 January, Russian ruler Vladimir Putin signed a decree on the call-up for military training of citizens in the reserve.
According to the document, which is published on the legal information portal, the organisation of the training camps is entrusted to the Government of the Russian Federation and executive authorities of the subjects of the Russian Federation.
The decree coming into force immediately contains two secret paragraphs marked ‘for official use’. They are supposed to fix the number of citizens who will be sent to the training camps and the timing of the training camps.
Military training camps in winter are a rare practice for Russia. In the last 20 years, training camps have been held in spring or summer. Putin's decree on last year's training camps was signed on 1 March, in 2023 - on 10 May, in 2022 and 2021 - on 26 April, in 2020 - on 29 June. The 2019 training camps were announced in late February and held in March, while the 2004-18 training camps began in March and June.
The last January training camps were held in Russia in 2003 - Putin signed the relevant decree on 29 December 2002. The 2001-02 training camps were held in a similar way: the decree was issued on one of the last days of the previous year. Putin announced the 2000 training camp on 27 January.
