Billionaires Grew $2 Trillion Richer In 2024

On average, four new billionaires were created every week in the world last year.

The total wealth of billionaires worldwide grew by $2 trillion in 2024, to $15 trillion, according to Oxfam, an international organization fighting inequality. Its report, Takers Not Makers, was published ahead of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

The number of billionaires increased by 204 to 2,769. On average, four new billionaires were created every week, and their combined wealth grew three times faster than in 2023.

The world’s ten richest people increased their wealth by $100 million every day last year. “Even if they lost 99% of their wealth overnight, they would still be billionaires,” Oxfam notes.

At the same time, the number of people living below the poverty line (meaning they earn $6.85 or less a day) has remained virtually unchanged since 1990 and is approaching 3.6 billion, or 44% of the world's population, Oxfam reports, citing the World Bank. The organization estimates that 733 million people are hungry worldwide, 152 million more than in 2019.
