Trump Plans To Lift Ban On Oil, Gas Drilling In U.S. Coastal Waters

The ban was introduced by Biden.

The newly elected President of the United States of America Donald Trump said that he may reverse the decision of President Joe Biden to ban future oil and gas development in the coastal waters of the States.

This is reported by CNN.

The current US President Joe Biden has indefinitely blocked the development of oil and gas resources in more than 625 million acres of coastal waters. The reason for this ban is that drilling simply ‘does not justify the risks’ and is ‘unnecessary’ to meet the nation's energy needs.

The ban is based on a federal law that gives U.S. presidents the power to restrict areas for oil production without the ability to overturn such decisions. This mechanism has been used by presidents of both parties to protect coral reefs and marine ecosystems.

Meanwhile, new development licences are still possible in the central and western Gulf of Mexico, which provide 14% of the nation's oil and gas production.

At the same time, Trump said he would try to reverse Biden's decision to impose a permanent ban on future offshore oil and gas development in parts of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

‘I just learned that Biden has banned all oil and gas drilling in 625 million acres of U.S. coastal territory. Look, this is ridiculous. I will lift that ban immediately,’ Trump said.

Oil and gas production is a key energy sector in the US and an important source of economic growth. Major production areas include Texas, North Dakota, New Mexico and the federal territories of the Gulf of Mexico. Advances in technology, particularly hydraulic fracturing (fracking), have made the US one of the largest producers of oil and natural gas in the world.

The U.S. federal government regulates oil and gas production on public lands and offshore areas through licensing and environmental regulations. However, the issue of greenfield development is often the subject of political controversy. Different presidential administrations have taken different approaches to the issue, with some expanding access to new areas for production, while others, conversely, limiting drilling to protect the environment.

In recent years, considerable attention has been given to reducing dependence on fossil fuels and shifting to renewable energy sources. However, oil and gas remain important elements of US energy policy, especially in the context of the country's energy independence and energy exports.
