Far-Right Politician Jean-Marie Le Pen Dies In France
JEAN-MARIE LE PEN

The founder of the right-wing National Front party was 96 years old.

The founder and long-time leader of the right-wing populist National Front party (now the National Rally) Jean-Marie Le Pen has died in France. He died at the age of 96 surrounded by his family, DW reported on Tuesday, January 7, citing relatives of the politician.

A few weeks ago, the father of the current leader of the French right-wing populists Marine Le Pen moved to a nursing home in the Paris suburb of Garches.

Le Pen was expelled from the party in 2015

Jean-Marie Le Pen founded the National Front party in 1972 and led it until 2011, after which he handed over leadership to his daughter Marine Le Pen. In 2015, at the insistence of Marine Le Pen, he was expelled from the party after numerous accusations of racism and anti-Semitism. In 2018, the National Front was renamed the National Rally.

One of Le Pen's greatest political successes was reaching the second round of the 2002 presidential election, where he lost to conservative Jacques Chirac.
