Journalist Ihar Karnei Loses 15 Kilos Behind Bars
IHAR KARNEI

The political prisoner has heart problems.

57-year-old journalist Ihar Karnei, sentenced to 3 years and 10 months in prison, has lost 15 kilograms behind bars and started having heart problems, reports Radio Svaboda.

The journalist was serving his sentence in the Shklou prison № 17. In December 2024, he stayed for some time in the KGB pre-trial detention centre in Minsk and in the Mahiliou remand prison. In Minsk, Ihar Karnei managed to see a doctor, who confirmed that his heart rhythm was ‘not very steady’ and prescribed him valerian.

According to the sources of the newspaper, Karnei does not complain about the conditions in detention and reads a lot. There is no telephone contact with him, but letters are received.

Recently one of them was received by the journalist's daughters, who are now abroad (Ihar has four of them). Radio Svaboda quotes its fragment :

‘Dear daughters! My biggest wish is very simple: for people to love, appreciate and respect you in your independent life as much as your mum and I do. I hope it will be so, because you deserve only the highest respect being beautiful, talented, compassionate. I, in turn, have repeatedly convinced during my ‘business trips’ to various institutions that no one can boast of having such a friendly large family. Therefore, at this stage it will not be an exaggeration to report the success of our common mission, although all the most interesting and exciting things are still ahead for you. Good luck and happiness in everything.’

In March 2022, Ihar Karnei was sentenced to 3 years in colony under the article on participating in an ‘extremist formation’ (part 3, article 361-1 of the Criminal Code). Later, the court added another 10 months of imprisonment under the article on malicious disobedience of the colony administration (Article 411 of the Criminal Code).
