Typhoon fighters may be used for this.
Britain may use Typhoon fighters to patrol the skies over Ukraine after the war ends and peace is signed, informed sources in the British government and the Royal Air Force told The Times.
According to them, London is discussing the creation of an “air police” for Ukraine similar to the NATO program, according to which the alliance has been protecting the airspace of the Baltic states since 2004.
This option seems more likely than the creation of a no-fly zone over the country, since in the latter case, aircraft would have to patrol the Ukrainian skies around the clock, one of the newspaper’s sources said.
It is assumed that dozens of “heavily armed” and always ready to take off fighters, which are planned to be stationed in Poland, will participate in the “police mission”. Such a decision could become part of security guarantees for Ukraine, and would also allow a smaller contingent of troops to monitor compliance with peace agreements on the ground, The Times notes. In this case, the UK will have to deploy a significant number of aircraft and air defense systems.
The discussion of this issue is at an early stage, but the newspaper's interlocutor in the Royal Air Force emphasized: “We are ready to do whatever we are told.”
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the country needs 100,000 European peacekeepers who will be able to prevent repeated Russian aggression after the end of the military conflict. However, according to the Washington Post, the European Union will be able to send only 25-30 thousand troops.
At the same time, Germany, Italy and Poland doubt the advisability of this decision, and France proposed sending peacekeepers not to the line of contact with the Russian army, but to the Ukrainian rear, where they will train soldiers and provide the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
US President Donald Trump supported the idea of deploying European peacekeepers in Ukraine, but emphasized that there will be no American contingent there.
