The US Senate has confirmed Donald Trump's nominee for Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) director, Kash Patel, the Associated Press reports. Fifty-one senators voted in favour of his nomination, 49 against.
At the same time, only two Republicans opposed Patel as head of the FBI - Senator from Maine Susan Collins and Senator from Alaska Lisa Murkowski.
AP notes that the FBI director's term is 10 years.
Republican Senator Chuck Grassley, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, considered Patel the right choice for the position. ‘Mr Patel wants to make the FBI accountable again, to bring back the reputation that the FBI has had historically for law enforcement,’ he said before approving the nomination.
