Macron Calls To Create Large-Scale Defence Plan For Europe

Strategic decisions need to be taken in the coming weeks.

French President Emmanuel Macron has called for strategic decisions to be taken for the defence of Europe. In addition, he proposes to introduce joint European funding to increase purchasing and production of weapons.

According to Macron, the strategic awakening should lead European countries to decide on a massive defence plan and substantial investments in Europe. According to him, such strategic decisions should be taken already in the coming weeks.

The French leader added that he advocates the introduction of joint European financing in order to ‘buy and produce more’.

He is convinced that it will be very difficult for Europe to have a united army. However, it is possible to create common defence capabilities, otherwise it will not be able to become more autonomous from the US.

The French President also said that the country must increase the share of its defence budget.

‘All countries that are on the front line spend 4 or 5 per cent of their gross domestic product, while we spend at the level of 2 per cent. We had such figures in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s when the Cold War was still going on. Then the Berlin Wall fell and we invested much less. That's over,’ Macron said.
