Rubio Names Condition For Meeting Between Trump, Putin

The US Secretary of State has named a condition.

The US delegation discussed recently in Saudi Arabia with Russian representatives the possibility of a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin. Washington says it depends on progress on ending the Russia-Ukraine war.

This was stated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, reports Reuters.

According to the US official, the meeting between Trump and Putin ‘will largely depend on whether we can make progress in ending the war in Ukraine.’

Rubio said he discussed the possibility of such a meeting during a conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Saudi Arabia last Tuesday.

‘There will be no meeting until we know what that meeting will be about,’ the U.S. secretary of state repeated his remarks to the Russian foreign minister and other members of the delegation from Moscow.

During an interview with journalist Catherine Gerridge, Rubio noted that ‘as a rule, you don't hold such meetings until you know of some result or have made some progress.’

‘So I think the timing of this meeting will depend a lot on whether we can make progress in ending the war in Ukraine, and if we can,’ the US secretary of state said.

Rubio also thinks that such a meeting should become ‘something that will seal the agreement’ and that ‘everyone should celebrate that President Trump is a peacemaker’.

We remind you, on 11 February, US President Donald Trump said that he would ‘probably’ meet with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin before the end of February.
