The British Prime Minister is to visit Washington soon.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will soon announce a new aid package for Ukraine and sanctions against Russia. This will happen despite Washington's increasing pressure on Kyiv to “back off” and accept a peace deal with Moscow.
The Telegraph reports this.
According to the British newspaper, Starmer will unveil a “triple whammy” of measures on Monday, February 24, the third anniversary of Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine, which includes military aid and sanctions.
"This is in stark contrast to the approach of Trump, who in recent days has branded Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a “dictator” and insisted on a quick end to the conflict,” The Telegraph reports.
The British publication also writes that Starmer will thus “defy Trump with new aid for Ukraine.”
In addition, the British media report states that the American president accused London on Friday of doing “nothing” to end the Russian-Ukrainian war.
What Starmer will talk about with Trump in the White House
As The Telegraph expects, during the British Prime Minister's planned visit to the US and talks with Trump on Thursday, Starmer may announce a date by which 2.5% of Britain's GDP will be spent on defense. Most likely, this will be 2030.
The head of the British government will also convey to the US President an invitation from the King to make a state visit to the United Kingdom.
At the same time, The Telegraph writes, Starmer's new package of support for Ukraine “risks disappointing the White House.”
What is known about the “triple whammy”
The British media note that on Monday the current gap between the positions of Great Britain and the US regarding the Russian-Ukrainian war will be emphasized. Thus, a package of measures involving three different government departments is being developed in Whitehall to demonstrate London's support for Kyiv.
The British Ministry of Defence is expected to soon publish new details of its military aid to Ukraine. One of the ideas being discussed is the provision of additional weapons for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, although the contents of the package have not yet been fully approved.
The UK Foreign Office is to publish a large set of sanctions against Russia, which could include up to 1,900 Russian individuals and entities involved in the aggression against Ukraine.
A government source told The Telegraph that the UK Home Office will step up the fight against Russian “dirty money”. The sanctions could target oligarchs who support Putin.
Whitehall calls the new package of measures a “full triple whammy” designed to highlight London's support for Kyiv.
On Monday, 24 February, Head of the British Ministry of Defence John Healey will give an interview during which he will explain the additional support. Foreign Secretary David Lemmy is expected to address the House of Commons.
