They were charged with attempting to overthrow the constitutional order.
The Romanian Prosecutor General's Office has detained 18 people in a case related to pro-Russian politician and former presidential candidate Calin Georgescu.
This was reported by Romania Journal.
The prosecutor's office has filed a motion to choose a preventive measure in the form of detention for 30 days for the 18 detained persons, as well as for three more defendants in absentia.
In particular, requests for arrest warrants were issued for the leader of the Romanian mercenary group Horatiu Potra, his son and brother. They were charged with attempting to overthrow the constitutional order, violating the rules for possession of weapons and incitement to commit a crime.
Potra, as noted, managed to flee the country after the searches.
Among those questioned in the case was also former Foreign Legion mercenary Eugen Secila, detained on a warrant at the capital's Henri Coandă Airport.
Thus, on Wednesday, the prosecutor's office conducted 47 searches in five counties of the country in the case against close associates of Calin Georgescu, including Horatiu Potra. Searches were conducted in the homes of 27 people and in four company headquarters. One of those searched was mercenary Horatiu Potra, a politician from the city of Mediaş.
During the searches, the prosecutor's office found an entire arsenal: dozens of firearms, magazines, grenades, grenade launchers and machine guns. Large amounts of cash were also found — $3,300,000, 700,000 lei, 24 kilograms of gold in the form of bars.
In the same case, prosecutors are also investigating the initiation or creation of an anti-Semitic organization, crimes against the constitutional order, false information about the sources of funding for an election campaign, or public incitement to commit a crime.
Georgescu, who was brought to a hearing on human trafficking on Wednesday and charged with activities against the constitutional order, false information, repeated false statements about the sources of funding for an election campaign, and asset declarations, claims that the investigation against him “reminds him of the communist mentality and system of the 1950s.”
