The US State Department has ended the USAID initiative to restore Ukraine's energy system. Hundreds of millions of dollars were invested in the program.
This was reported by a target="_blank" href=https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/state-department-terminates-us-support-ukraine-energy-grid-restoration-rcna194259>NBC News.
According to the publication, support for the program to restore Ukraine's energy system was terminated this week.
“This will significantly undermine the administration's ability to negotiate a ceasefire and will signal to Russia that we don't care about Ukraine or our past investments,” one of the employees of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) told NBC News.
He noted that Russia is waging an “economic war” against Ukraine, but USAID played a central role in helping the Ukrainian economy be sustainable.
“We provided tremendous support to the Ukrainian government to avoid a macroeconomic crisis,” the agency employee added.
NBC News recalls that 64 USAID employees previously worked in Ukraine. But after the Trump administration's decision to put nearly all of them on leave and return them to the United States, only eight of the agency's people will remain in Ukraine.
