Secretary of State Marco Rubio has revealed the details.
The United States has finally moved away from its intention to quickly end the war in Ukraine. Now the White House promises to seek peace in Ukraine “as long as it takes.” The corresponding statement was made by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a conversation with the press, the State Department reports.
“We’re going to – we’re trying to achieve peace. We’re committed to trying to achieve peace as long as it takes. That doesn’t mean that I can guarantee you that there’s going to be an agreement in a week or a month. I just can’t put a timeframe on it because it doesn’t depend on us. It depends on the Russians and it depends on the Ukrainians. It also depends on our partners in Europe who have sanctions that will have to be taken into account, I believe, as part of any final deal,” he said.
During the briefing, one of the journalists recalled that a month ago, when starting negotiations with Russia in Saudi Arabia, Rubio himself called these meetings one of the ways to understand whether Russia really wants peace or is just stalling for time. In this regard, the journalist directly asked whether Rubio is now ready to say that Russia is stalling for time.
“Well, I’m not prepared to pass judgment on it. They’re meeting with us. They’re talking to us. They’re making proposals. They’re agreeing to ceasefires but with conditions that we need to analyze. I’m not prepared to characterize it as one or the other. And I never said it was going to be simple. There’s a lot of work to be done with both sides, in particular the Russian side, which we haven’t talked to in years,” said Rubio.
