Friedrich Merz is a German politician, the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), who has a high chance of becoming the new Chancellor of Germany after the victory of the CDU/CSU bloc in the parliamentary elections on February 23, 2025.
Merz is known for his support of Ukraine. He was one of the first German politicians to visit Kyiv after the liberation of part of the Kyiv region in the spring of 2022. Then he emphasized the need to supply Ukraine with weapons and grant it candidate status for joining the European Union. Merz also expressed support for Ukraine's accession to NATO.
His position on Ukraine remains consistent, he supports the provision of military and political assistance in the face of Russian aggression. It is expected that if Merz is elected Chancellor, Germany will continue to support Ukraine in the international arena.
