Drones Strike Russian Regions, Causing Damage to Factory, Plant, And Oil Facility

Airport operations suspended due to massive strike.

Several regions in Russia were rocked by explosions overnight on March 9 as air defense systems responded to incoming drones. Reports indicate that a factory, an industrial plant, and an oil facility in the Ryazan, Lipetsk, Voronezh, and Kursk regions came under attack.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing local authorities and Russian media sources.

Lipetsk Region

The governor of the Lipetsk region, Igor Artamonov, declared an "air raid alert" across the entire region the previous evening. Later, he reported an imminent UAV attack on Lipetsk and the Lipetsk municipal district.

“The drone attack continues… Air defense and suppression systems are in operation,” the Russian official wrote on Telegram.

Local social media groups reported multiple explosions near Lipetsk. According to the Mash and SHOT Telegram channels, residents of Lipetsk heard at least seven explosions.

Russian media claimed that the target of the drone strike was the Novolipetsk Metallurgical Plant (NLMK). Videos shared online captured the sound of an explosion near the plant and in the city of Lipetsk. Reports also mentioned a fire breaking out at the plant following the blasts.

Strategic Importance of the Lipetsk Plant

Lieutenant Andriy Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD), commented on the reported attack on NLMK, describing it as "one of Russia’s largest metallurgical enterprises."

“The plant plays a crucial role in Russia’s industrial sector, including the defense industry,” he wrote on Telegram, explaining why NLMK’s production is strategically important to the Russian military:

Steel and rolled metal production – NLMK manufactures a wide range of metal products used in military vehicles, armored equipment, and shipbuilding.

Metal supplies for the defense industry – NLMK’s metal is used in armored vehicle manufacturing, including combat vehicle hulls, as well as aviation and missile production.

Role in shipbuilding – Russian warships and submarines are built using steel supplied by NLMK.

Military equipment repair and modernization – NLMK’s metal is essential for repairing and upgrading armored vehicles.

NLMK is classified as a strategic enterprise in Russia, closely tied to both the country’s economic and military infrastructure.

Ryazan Region

Several explosions were also heard in this region, with local reports describing air defense activity against drones.

The governor of the Ryazan region, Pyotr Malkov, stated that a UAV was allegedly "destroyed by air defense systems over Ryazan."

"According to preliminary information, there are no casualties, and residential buildings or social infrastructure remain undamaged. Emergency services are assessing material damage at the crash site," the Russian official reported.

Meanwhile, reports on social media indicated explosions near the Ryazan oil refinery.

“Residents heard air defense activity and several blasts near the oil refinery,” Telegram channel Mash stated.

Additionally, videos purportedly showing the overnight drone attack near Ryazan surfaced on the internet.
