The US Senate Preparing Powerful Sanctions Blow Against Kremlin

Including a 500% tariff on goods from countries that buy Russian oil and gas.

US senators have come out in favor of tough sanctions against Russia, including a 500% tariff on goods from countries that buy Russian oil and gas.

This is reported by The Washington Times.

Republican Senators Lindsey Graham and Democratic Senators Richard Blumenthal have introduced a bill to impose sanctions against Russia for refusing to make long-term peace with Ukraine.

The 50 co-sponsors of the bill in the Senate include an equal number of Republicans and Democrats, indicating broad bipartisan support for the initiative.

“The dominant view in the United States Senate is that Russia is an aggressor, and that this terrible war and Putin's aggression must end now and be contained in the future,” the senators said in a joint statement.

The document provides for both primary and secondary sanctions against Russia and individuals who support the Kremlin's aggression against Ukraine. The restrictions will be applied if peace talks fail or an agreement is reached but violated by Russia.

In particular, the law may impose a 500% tariff on imported goods from countries that buy Russian oil, gas, uranium and other products.

This could provide some assurances to President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has said he wants protection from a new Russian military invasion to be enshrined in the agreement.

In the document, the senators expressed hope that in 2025, President Trump and his team “will achieve what the world has failed to do in the past: finally stop Russian aggression against Ukraine and ensure the survival of a free and democratic Ukraine.”

“These sanctions against Russia are already in place and will receive overwhelming bipartisan, bicameral support if submitted to a vote in the Senate and House of Representatives,” the authors of the document noted.
